How to make dialog and sound effects sound distant? Sometimes I've had good success, and sometimes I can't get it to sound good at all. Biggest problem always seems to be that it sounds too "verby" or processed. Last night I watched Jacob the Liar and the background dialog sounded like I've always wanted to do have mine: real, and on the street.

Does anybody know if this was obtain artificial, or if some of it was actually recorded in a narrow alley and street to obtain this effect? If it was done artificially, can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Obviously, you need a reasonably quiet place to record in order for this technique to work very well. Though the louder you do the playback, the less problematic ambient noise will be. Watch out for distortion, though! I can still remember when all major recording studios and film post houses had acoustic echo chambers. Housed usually in the basement of the facility, the best ones were constructed like an intricate maze.

These were numerous microphones and speakers placed throughout the various passageways in the maze and by selecting different mikes and speakers you could custom the audio to almost any desired reverb effect. Of course using EQ effectively also helped to achieve some really amazing results.

How to Match Sound from Two or More Separate Recordings

In the Project panel, double-click Bars and Tone. The Bars and Tone clip opens in the Source Monitor. Click the Play button in the Source Monitor or play the clip from Timeline. If you do not hear the tone, then go to Sound is missing from all clips. If you do hear the tone, then go to Sound is missing from some clips.

Your computer could have more than one device that can play back audio e.

Set your preferred device as the system default sound playback device, and then verify that its volume is not muted or set low. Use the Control Panel to check your default audio device and its volume setting.

If you need additional help using the Control Panel to check these settings, use the following Microsoft Help links:. Open an Adobe Premiere Pro project that contains audio clips, video clips with audio, or a Bars and Tone clip.

Or click the Settings button to open the Settings dialog box, and choose your default audio device. Play a clip. If you still do not hear sound, then go back to Step 2 and try a different audio device. For best results, enable the device that you chose as the system default playback device in Task 1. Note: For more information on Premiere Pro audio drivers and audio hardware preferences, see Audio hardware preferences.

If you don't hear sound after completing the tasks above, then the driver for your computer's sound card could be out-of-date. Many sound card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. Contact the manufacturer of your sound card or the manufacturer of your computer for an updated driver, or download one from the manufacturer's website. When you have updated the driver, repeat the solutions above.

If sound is missing only from certain clips or only from clips in a certain project, then do the following tasks in order:. In the Timeline panel, look at the box at the far left or far upper left of each audio track's header. If no speaker icon appears in this box, then the track is disabled. To enable a disabled audio track, click in the box. A speaker icon appears. In the illustrated example below, the speaker icon circled indicates that the Audio 1 track is enabled.

On the right side, the empty box indicates that the Audio 1 track is disabled:. Use the Audio Mixer or Timeline panel to determine if an audio track is muted or has low volume, and to increase the volume if necessary. If the M next to any of the tracks is highlighted, the audio is muted.

Click M to turn sound on.

Check for muted or low-volume tracks. Verify that individual clip's volume is not muted or low. Also verify that individual clips are not disabled. If you completed the steps above and you still don't hear sound, the problematic clips could have been encoded with an incompatible codec.

Codecs are algorithms for compressing audio and video data. Many different codecs exist. Sometimes, Adobe Premiere Pro can't decode files that were encoded with a poorly designed codec or a codec that is not installed on your computer.

You can download third-party codecs from codec publishers' websites. If the codec used to create the clips isn't available as a QuickTime component, use other software to transcode them with a different audio-encoding format.

Then, import the transcoded files into Adobe Premiere Pro.Most of the time, we use this shaping capability to create ear-catching sound effects. However, I also use these techniques to warm up a voice or, more importantly, to improve the clarity of speech.

One of the sad facts of life is that as we get older, we lose the ability to hear high-frequency sounds, which means that it becomes harder to understand what people are saying.

Once you understand how this technique works in one application you can use it anywhere, because all that changes is the interface. NOTE : Since this article was released, I added two companion articles on boosting and smoothing audio levels.

Whether we are listening to music, speech or noise, all human hearing is based on frequencies — the variations in the pitch of a sound — and volume. Normal human hearing is defined as a range of frequencies from 20 cycles Hz to 20, Hz.

This range is typical for an year-old adult. Children can hear frequencies beyond this range, while older folks hear less. For example, an adult male voice is roughly — 6, Hz, while an adult female voice is roughly — 8, Hz. And, yes, there is LOTS of variation between individuals. Audio frequencies are logarithmic. What this means is that each time the frequencies double, the pitch goes up an octave for you music majors out there.

Vintage Effect for Voice Over (Black & White Film/Old Vinyl)

So, while human hearing spans ten octaves, human speech only covers about five octaves. When it comes to speech, vowels are low-frequency sounds — they lend the voice its richness, sexiness, and identity.

Consonants, in contrast, are generally higher frequency sounds — they provide clarity to speech. As we age, our ability to hear high-frequency sounds decreases. A good analogy is listening to two people talk on the other side of a wall. Which gets me to the purpose of this article. To improve clarity, we boost a range of higher frequencies. This displays the filter. The seven white dots represent control points:. The two control points we are most interested in for this article are 2 and 4 which control frequencies at the bottom and top of human speech.

What an EQ filter does is boost the gain audio level of a range of frequencies. When we adjust the volume of clip, we adjust all frequencies equally. An EQ filter allows us to boost some frequencies without boosting others.

We are always adjusting a range. To improve clarity, we need to boost the higher frequencies in the voice. For me, improving clarity is much more important than boosting bass. Here are the settings I recommend you start with:. In both these cases, we are making small adjustments. Think of this as adding seasoning to a soup. However, you can make it better than it was.

To compare your results, click the green Power button to enable green or disable gray the filter. Adjust the filter to best suit the voice and what you want it to sound like. FCP X has a very similar filter, and the settings are similar. The further away something is the lower the volume gets.

The second one is equalization. And the third is reverberation. So we opted out of that. We also could have used a boom mic on the camera but for me that would have picked up not only him yelling but the whole world also. So instead we opted to do clean audio later and just get him yelling on the field to do the performance.

In fact we have a field recording that we had running. So what do we do? First thing we do is we bring Micah back into my office and this is a more controlled area. I put him about 6 inches away from the microphone then I had him repeat his performance as if he was yelling at me from a mountainside. One of the keys is the performance that he delivers has to match the action on the screen. Now I can start adding stuff. Also, I want to make sure I get room tone.

Sometimes you can find some room tone in other takes. There could be moment before the cameras roll where people are kind of quiet or even when action is called and the actor kind of sits and thinks for a second. You could steal three seconds here, five seconds there, and then loop that. But generally speaking always try and get room tone. Make sure all your tracks are separate. Now this interface is really cool because it allows me to control the volumes and the pan levels of individual tracks.

And this is where the magic happens. High frequencies have a hard time traveling really long distances. The right side represents the high frequencies, the left side represents the low frequencies and the middle the middle frequencies.

See how that line just dives down in the high frequencies? In fact it sounds really good. Note, try not to edit little bits of audio in a vacuum without hearing the rest of the mix. This will help you to tune the sound just the way you want it.Todd Perchert. Eric Santiago. Jon Doughtie. Ann Bens.
