PVC Drip Irrigation is inexpensive and easy to build method for watering your backyard garden. After adding a PVC drip irrigation system to your garden you can expect stronger vegetable plants, fewer weeds, and a lower water bill! Let me start out this post by strongly stating my opinion about drip irrigation systems.
There are several reasons I feel so strongly about drip systems. First, they use a ton less water. Second, because you are only watering your plants, you are by default not watering weeds. This makes a big difference in the amount of work you have to do weeding your garden.
Third, they are much more flexible in allowing you to change the configuration of your garden each year. You can run the tubing to each tomato or squash and get the water right where you want it.
But kit systems are very expensive; to do a garden my size would take hundreds of dollars. But they waste some water when you are dealing with larger individual plants. They are also very expensive as you have to buy a lot of hoses to water a big garden.
You can deal with larger plants and row crops based on the number of holes you drill in the pipes. They are cheaper to build for larger gardens. PVC systems can also be very flexible. The one disadvantage is the initial set up the first year can take a while because you have to drill a lot of holes in the pipe.

Notice it works for both the row crops like carrots, peas, beans, potatoes, and corn. PVC Drip Irrigation also works perfectly for larger crops like tomatoes and squash. Again it works perfectly for all the row crops we grow here. First time set up is easy but time-consuming. The biggest time commitment comes from having to drill hundreds of holes in the pipe.Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is widely used in irrigation systems, both above-ground and buried.
With many fittings regularly available, including slip, threaded, and push fit, the configuration options are endless. Read on to learn more about what to consider when choosing pipe fittings for irrigation applications. Both schedule 40 and schedule 80 PVC piping are commonly used in irrigation systems. Gray in color to differentiate from schedule 40, schedule 80 has thicker walls, making it stronger. That design increases PSI, but can also restrict flow.
Schedule 40 PVC, on the other hand, is white with thinner walls. Schedule 40 piping is also lighter than its counterpart, making it less expensive and a bit easier to work with. Fittings for PVC are measured the same way, in schedule 40 and schedule 80 options. This will ensure a consistent strength throughout the irrigation system. Commercial Industrial Supply. These connections have no thread and are solvent welded, which means that a cement glue is applied to both the pipe and the fitting.
The acetone in the cement glue allows the pipes to melt together, forming a very tight seal. However, threaded joints need a sealer as well. The sealer lubricates the parts, making it easier to thread the pieces together. It also creates a stronger seal. Teflon tape is commonly used to seal threaded joints. Exposure to Sunlight. PVC piping is known for its strength, but it can become brittle when exposed to long periods of sunlight. In order to avoid exposure to sunlight in above-ground irrigation, you can apply several coats of an exterior latex paint or use foam pipe insulation.
Both will help to block sunlight and avoid leaks or cracks caused by brittle pipes. In-ground irrigation systems should always be buried at least 10 inches deep. This depth could minimize the likelihood of being struck with a shovel or other tool, which could easily lead to cracking and breaking. Pipes that are not buried deep enough may also float to the surface in winter. In areas where temperatures consistently dip below freezing, you may want to consider using foam pipe insulation.
Winterizing, where all water is flushed out of the system before the winter season, will also be necessary to avoid pipe breaks in the off-season. Make the cut as clean and square as possible, removing any burrs that may be left inside the joint with a utility knife. Next, use a fine grit sandpaper to lightly scuff the end of the pipe and remove any caked-on dirt, then wipe away dust with a clean, dry cloth.
Doing a dry-fit is important as well. Assemble all the pipes and fittings to be sure they are the correct length before cement glue or sealant is applied. This temporarily softens a thin layer of PVC so that the cement glue can bond the two pieces together.
Apply a layer of primer on the outside end of the pipe as well as the inside of the fitting. Then, brush the cement onto the end of the pipe and inside the fitting, making sure to cover all points of contact. Slide the pipe into the fitting until it meets the shoulder. Give the pipe a slight turn to evenly distribute the cement, and hold it firmly for 30 seconds to a minute until the cement cures.

The right size pipe depends on the overall capacity of your system. To determine the right size pipe for your needs, you must calculate the flow rate of the receptacle from which the water will flow.
The simplest way to do this is to get a one-gallon bucket and a stopwatch. Place the bucket under the faucet and turn it on full blast at the same time you turn on the stopwatch. When the bucket is filled, stop the stopwatch and note the time. Divide the number of gallons, in this case, 1, by the time it took to fill the bucket, and then multiply that number by 60 seconds. That number is flow rate in terms of gallons per minute, or GPM.

Both of these PVC types will work well for landscape irrigation systems. Schedule 40 piping has a slightly thicker wall than PR in sizes below 6 inches in diameter and can withstand higher pressures, but the thicker wall also means that Schedule 40 is slightly more expensive and that there will be more pressure lost to friction.
Schedule 40 is somewhat more forgiving if installed in rocky ground. Either type will work well. Be careful not to buy drain, waste and vent DWV PVC fittings — they are less expensive, but they are not designed to handle higher pressures and may fail over time. Figure 2. Black Roll pipe.

What Is the Right Size PVC Pipe for a Sprinkler System?
The pipe comes in foot rolls and is connected with insert fittings and clamps. Black roll pipe is somewhat more difficult to install, but not appreciably so. Black roll pipe is used in Northern areas because it will expand a small amount, which allows the water in it to be frozen with little or no damage — an important characteristic in the North. In the South we typically will not have pipe freezing problems if we install the piping to the recommended 12 inch depth.
Either black roll piping or PVC piping will work well in our climate, but you may find the PVC piping easier to install and repair.
Just imagine that your sprinkler system is installed and working nicely. Uncle Bob stops in to visit, and as he leaves he backs into the yard — right over a sprinkler.
The sprinkler is crushed, of course, but since the sprinkler was screwed directly into the PVC pipe, a good portion of the pipe below ground is broken, too. Figure 3. Swing pipe is installed between the PVC piping and the sprinkler to allow some flexibility if the sprinkler is crushed or driven over.
Usually two feet of swing pipe will be used to attach a sprinkler to the PVC, but three or four feet may be used if needed.
Swing pipe allows the installer to move the sprinkler around a little during installation just in case a planned sprinkler location turns out to be right behind a tree or an obstacle. Swing pipe is relatively inexpensive and will certainly pay for itself if even only one repair of this type is required. Special fittings are sold for the swing pipe to attach it to the sprinkler and the PVC piping. Other piping types are either too expensive or too difficult to work with in the landscape.

This tour is a perfect tour for a 'taste' of Iceland. But it leaves us hungry for more. Nordic Visitor made visiting Iceland very easy. Since some locations were in unpopulated areas we would have found it hard to choose where to stay.
